The article is devoted to the study of the psychological characteristics of the activity of a modern head of a territorial police unit (department), which is considered as a set of personal variables determining the effectiveness of managerial activity, as well as a number of requirements imposed by the position on the executor (psychogram). The study is based on the use of a range of methods, including psychological diagnostics, through which approximately nine hundred heads of police units were examined. As a result of the study, the main components of the manager’s psychogram were identified. The obtained data were processed using statistical methods, which made it possible to determine both quantitative and qualitative characteristics of professionally important qualities necessary for mastering the role of a police unit head, as well as psychological contraindications to successful performance in a managerial position. The experimental data obtained will contribute to improving the process of professional selection and appointment of individuals to managerial positions within the National Police, as well as the professional training of managerial personnel
