Taking into account the specifics of the professional activity of military sailors, the article analyzes their psychological characteristics. The influence of factors that negatively affect the effectiveness of the professional activity of servicemen of the Naval Forces is analyzed. On the basis of the considered criteria for the suitability for professional military service of candidates for military service under a contract in the Naval Forces, a list of professionally important qualities of a military sailor is presented
