The article examines the essence of self-regulation of the individual as a complex integrative phenomenon. A review of the concepts and views of domestic and foreign scientists on the mechanisms of self-regulation, starting from biological theories and ending with psychological concepts of the regulation of mental states, was carried out. Aspects of research into value-meaning formations as basic qualities of an individual that direct and regulate his activity are highlighted. The stages of formation of self-regulation of the individual in the system of its integration are analyzed: basal emotional self-regulation, volitional and value self-regulation, and systems and types of mental self-regulation: current, situational and long-term. It is noted that a person's mental organization is integral and manifests itself in certain relationships of physiological and emotional reactions, cognitive processes, behavior and other characteristics of his mental activity. It is emphasized that the decisive factor in optimizing the mental state of an individual is his internal resources and the ability to manage himself
