The article analyzes the concept of motivation and the essence of the motivational phenomenon of personality. The personal foundations of the formation of the meaningful components of a motive in the process of human activity are characterized. Progressive scientific approaches to the process of formation and development of personal motives are considered. The diversity of definitions of the concept of “motive” is analyzed, which indicates the complexity and insufficient comprehensiveness of its study; in a broad sense, this term should be regarded as the basis and impetus for emotional manifestations, certain actions, and behavior in general. Different groups and types of motives and their connection with needs are highlighted, which is explained by the similarity of their essences. Emphasis is placed on the fact that needs realized by a person become motives, and motives activate activity aimed at satisfying needs. It is shown that motivation and motive are different in essence but interrelated concepts that correlate as general and specific. It is defined that the motives of personality should be understood as internal drives (conscious and unconscious) to act, while the main motives are certain desires, interests, beliefs, aspirations, and ideals of the individual. Theoretical provisions that are important determinants of a qualitative study of the psychological foundations of personality motivation are substantiated
