The article attempts to substantiate the motivation and abilities of the learner as components of the mechanisms for forming their career plans. In particular, it is noted that the success of the formation of professional plans and educational activities of a student, taking into account the general model of personality, is characterised by data obtained in the assessment of the mechanisms of mental regulation in the interconnection of intellectual and motivational correlates of his personality
