The study considers the development of cognitive reading skills in a foreign language as a complex process that involves the mechanisms of working memory. It establishes which working memory mechanisms influence the process of reading in a foreign language and how. It outlines the content and principles of teaching and applying reading strategies. It determines the influence on the performance of tasks on understanding the text read when using reading strategies
