The article examines key aspects of leadership psychology as a factor in the effective management of units of the National Guard of Ukraine. It identifies the main psychological characteristics of a leader and considers the specifics and role of innovative leadership. The main requirements for a leader-commander are formulated and the main professional qualities of a modern commander as an effective unit manager are systematised. The key features of the four quadrants of self-actualisation are highlighted and the quadrant that a unit commander should focus on in the process of solving official (combat) tasks is determined
