The article is devoted to the justification of learning motivation as a subject of psychological research. In particular, it is noted that the study of the motivation of students' educational and professional activities primarily covers two main problems. The first is an understanding of the relationship between the needs, motivation and specific activities of the student aimed at achieving an educational goal or completing a certain educational task. The second is the need to develop a typology or compile a list of motives that make up the structure (hierarchy) of professional motivation, in particular, in certain specialties (for example, psychology students), to explain the features of the driving forces that cause and shape this activity
