The article updates the problem of the development of emotional intelligence in students of pedagogical higher education institutions. Analyzing the results of the conducted research in general, it is possible to note an insufficient level of theoretical knowledge about the concept of emotional intelligence and its role in the educational process. A low level of knowledge of future teaching staff about ways of influencing students' own emotional state and condition, methods of combating stress was also revealed. A low level of awareness of these aspects of personal and professional development can negatively affect the construction of relationships with other subjects of educational activity, lead to an increased level of stress, professional burnout and early retirement from the profession, or insufficient quality performance of their professional duties. In order to preserve the psychological health of future teachers, it is necessary to expand the level of knowledge of modern student teachers about ways to overcome anxiety, aggression and stress, as well as to increase the level of development of their emotional intelligence
