The article presents the results of a theoretical analysis of research focused on studying the problems of forming adequate self-esteem and positive self-attitude in children with special needs. The main individual and typological features that often negatively affect the adaptation process are given: low self-esteem and the level of harassment, emotional discomfort in the form of pronounced anxiety and other characteristics, as well as the results of an experimental study of indicators of cognitive, emotional and behavioral components of the positive self-concept in two groups of children - healthy and with special needs. It was found that children with special needs differ from healthy ones by low self-esteem of the real self and low indicators of meaningful life orientations. They are not self-confident and do not tend to show social initiative and courage in social contacts. At the same time, they do not differ from healthy children in the indicators of the level of harassment (ideal self), self-respect and autosympathy. Comprehensive measures implemented in practice and showing their own effectiveness are considered, which are designed to ensure positive dynamics of changes in the part of children's assessment of themselves and their own capabilities. The contradictory nature of self-esteem of children with special needs is noted
