The article analyzes the psychological foundations of the development of leadership qualities in commanders of military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which determine the leading functional role of leadership in commanders, having the greatest influence on the overall effectiveness of its functioning through the establishment of new models of behavior, procedures, principles and values. Leadership reflects the commander's ability to independently and adequately agree on external and internal conditions of activity to achieve the optimal way to solve professional tasks
